The effect of arginine vasopressin (AVP) on the central cholinergic neurotransmission was investigated in mice, focusing on the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) interneurons of the cingulate cortex. Following the unilateral administration of AVP into the cingulate cortex, the concentration of acetylcholine in the cingulate cortex of the injected hemisphere decreased significantly (by about 30%) on day 3 and returned to the level observed in control animals on day 7. This inhibitory effect was accompanied by an increase in the number of the GAD67- and parvalbumin-immunoreactive interneurons, with no significant changes in their spatial and temporal arrangement. In contrast, the intracortical administration of AVP increased the density of the cholinergic axons in the cingulate cortex. The data obtained suggest that AVP affects the cholinergic neurotransmission by modulating the number of the GABAergic interneurons.[Granulomatosis with polyangiitis in two sisters].
